When a family finishes building a brand-new home in the mountains of Waynesville, NC, the last thing they want is bare glass staring back at them every evening. New construction almost always means big, beautiful windows — and zero privacy, glare on every screen, and afternoon sun heating up freshly painted rooms. This Haywood County project is a perfect example of how the right roller shades can finish a mountain home without hiding the reason you built here in the first place: the view.

Our team at Love Is Blinds measured and installed custom light-filtering roller shades throughout this new build, including a living room picture window, a glass patio door, and a garden tub window overlooking the hillside. Here's a look at how each space came together, and why roller shades were the right call for this Waynesville home.

1. Light-Filtering Roller Shades for the Living Room

The living room window is the heart of this home, and the homeowners wanted softness without blackout darkness. We installed a custom light-filtering roller shade in a textured neutral fabric that diffuses the strong western North Carolina sun instead of blocking it entirely. Even fully lowered, the room stays bright and warm — but the glare on the TV is gone and the sofa fabric is protected from UV fading.

The shade is finished with a sleek black fascia that conceals the roller tube and matches the home's black window hardware and fixtures. Against the crisp white trim, it reads as a deliberate design choice rather than an afterthought — a detail builders and designers in Waynesville and Maggie Valley ask us for again and again on new construction.

2. A Roller Shade Made for the Patio Door

Glass doors are one of the most common problem spots we see in mountain homes. This patio door opens onto a deck with a long-range view, so the homeowners didn't want heavy drapery or vertical blinds swinging around every time someone stepped outside. The answer was a door-mounted roller shade installed directly on the door itself.

Because the shade travels with the door, it never gets in the way — no cords to catch, nothing to unhook. Lower it in the evening for full privacy, raise it in the morning and the mountains are right there again. It's a clean, practical solution for patio doors, French doors, and sidelights alike.

3. Privacy for the Garden Tub — Before and After

Here's the garden tub window the day we arrived: brand-new construction, gorgeous natural light, and absolutely nothing between the bathtub and the neighbors. Bathrooms are where new-build homeowners feel the missing window treatments first, and this one needed a solution that could handle humidity while still letting daylight in.

And here it is finished — a custom roller shade with the same black fascia detail, mounted neatly inside the freshly trimmed opening. The homeowners can drop the shade for total privacy during a soak, then roll it up out of sight to enjoy the hillside view. Moisture-friendly fabric means no warping or peeling like you'd see with cheaper treatments in a bathroom.

Why Roller Shades Work So Well in Mountain Homes

Window treatments for mountain homes have a unique job description: manage intense, angled sunlight; insulate against cool mountain evenings; protect floors and furniture from UV; and disappear when you want the view. Custom roller shades check every box. They offer fabric choices from sheer to blackout, motorization options for tall or hard-to-reach windows, and clean lines that suit both rustic and modern mountain builds throughout Waynesville, Clyde, Canton, and the greater Asheville area.

Every shade in this project was measured in person and cut to the exact dimensions of each opening — which is why the fit looks built-in rather than bought-off-the-shelf. Is your new build or renovation still staring back at you with bare glass?
